The similar pronunciation of the two words led to many in Sweden consuming waffles on this day, which gradually spread and thus International Waffle Day was formed.

This is not to be confused with National Waffle Day, celebrated in the United States, which falls on the 24th August 2020. That’s two days in the whole year dedicated to waffles!
